How to search the database

Herbarium UPS includes approximately 3.1 million objects, 620 000 of which have been digitized so far (22 April 2013). Digitized objects include vascular plants, fungi (incl. lichens), bryophytes, and algae.

The extent of digitization differs substantially between organismal groups. Currently, Nordic lichenized fungi and Nordic non-lichenized ascomycetes are particularly well covered. The approximate extent to which each of the vascular plant families have been digitized can be viewed in this PDF document.

Mouse-over help is available for some of the fields on the search page. Searches are case-insensitive. Use the sign * as a wildcard. A logical "and" will be used between fields containing search strings. Restrict searches to a particular organism group by using the organism group code in the "Catalogue no." field (V for vascular plants, F for fungi, L for lichens, B for bryophytes, and A for algae). The "Year" field can be used to search for an interval (with ... between the starting and ending years) or periods before or after a specified year (by the use of < and >, respectively).

Searches will time out after 3 minutes. In practice, this means that text file downloads are limited to around 1000 objects, whereas on-screen results can be more extensive.

If you need to perform searches other than the ones possible through this website, or if you come across factual errors in the database contents, please contact the Director.
